The plane with 15 Italian tourists who were stranded for a few days on the Yemeni island of Socotra took off this morning to return to the United Arab Emirates. The group – made up of people from Milan, Bergamo, a person from Rimini and some Venetians – left Abu Dhabi on 23 April with the only weekly flight to the island. But, due to the civil war that had been going on for years and the resulting difficulties with flights, none of them had been able to return on schedule. Socotra, a large island off the coast of Yemen towards Somalia, remains a destination explicitly not recommended on the Farnesina Crisis Unit’s ‘Safe Travel’ website.
